The gray film on Fort Myers lanai furniture is salt, mildew, and pollen stacked together. What removes each one safely, by material - and what ruins it.
The dull gray film on Fort Myers lanai furniture is almost never one thing. It is salt haze carried in off the Gulf, a mildew bloom living on the humidity, and a layer of pollen and road dust holding both in place. Most of it comes off with warm water, a few drops of mild dish soap, and a soft brush, followed by a full hose rinse. Mildew that has actually taken hold needs a weak bleach solution - roughly one part household bleach to four parts water - and only on synthetic frames and hardware, never on teak. The one tool to leave in the garage is the pressure washer.
Because the screen enclosure is holding the same film. A lanai cage collects salt and mildew across its entire surface, and every breeze and rain shower moves some of that back down onto the furniture underneath. Cleaning the chairs while ignoring the cage is why the job seems to last three weeks in Lee County and three months everywhere else. Homes on the canals in Cape Coral, along McGregor, and out toward the causeway pick up noticeably more salt deposition than places further inland toward Lehigh Acres, and it shows up first as pitting on unprotected metal hardware.
Generally no, and this is the most common way people ruin a set. A pressure washer drives water deep into cushion foam where it will not dry out in Southwest Florida humidity, so the cushion grows mildew from the inside. On powder-coated aluminum it lifts the coating at the edges and seams, which exposes bare metal to salt air and starts corrosion that was not there before. On teak and other softwoods it erodes the soft grain between the harder rings and leaves a permanently furry surface. The frames of a screen enclosure and the pool deck around it are a different matter - those are hard surfaces built for it, and that is normal pool deck and lanai cleaning work.
Powder-coated aluminum: mild soap and a soft brush, then rinse. No abrasive pads - once the coating is scratched, salt gets underneath it. Resin wicker: soft brush into the weave, rinse thoroughly, and let it dry in shade rather than baking in direct sun, which makes resin brittle over time. Teak: soap, water, and a soft brush with the grain. The silver-gray patina is the wood protecting itself and does not need to be removed. Sling fabric: scrub both sides, because mildew grows on the underside first where it stays damp. Cushions: check the tag, clean with mild soap, rinse until the water runs clear, and stand them on edge to dry all the way through - a cushion put away damp is a mildew factory.
A quick hose rinse monthly keeps salt from accumulating, and a proper wash three or four times a year handles the mildew. The two moments that matter most are before and after storm season. Furniture dragged into a hot garage ahead of a storm and left there for a week comes back musty, because it went in with moisture already in the fabric. Clean it and dry it completely before it gets stored, and give it another wash when it comes back out.
The same salt and mildew film sits on siding, soffits, and the driveway, and the lanai tends to be the place homeowners notice it first. Will bleach damage my screen enclosure? Diluted and rinsed promptly, it is generally fine on the screen itself, but keep it off aluminum frames and fasteners, and never let it dry on any surface. Rinse everything nearby, including the plants at the edge of the cage.
Can I use a magic-eraser type pad on white resin chairs? On heavy stains, sparingly. Those pads are a fine abrasive, so they will dull a glossy finish if you lean on them, which then holds dirt worse than before.
My cushions still smell musty after washing. Now what? The foam core is still wet. Stand the cushions on edge in a breezy shaded spot for a full day or two rather than lying flat, and if the smell persists after they are genuinely dry, the mildew is inside the foam and the covers alone will not fix it.
